Supervising Students

This section provides information on postgraduate student supervision

UL offers Postgraduate Research Awards at two levels, Master's by Research and PhD. Both require the investigation of fact and the communication to a wider audience, in the form of conference and journal publication and a final thesis. In the case of PhD awards the thesis may consist of either a monograph or a specified number of published journal papers, known as an Article Based PhD. Support for postgraduate research is provided by the UL Graduate School. Students pursuing a research degree are assigned one or two supervisors who are approved by the Head of Department and the Vice President Research or his/her nominee.

A Guide for Research Students and Supervisors is available on the Graduate School website detailing all aspects relating to the supervisory process.

Supervisors should have a working knowledge of academic regulations and procedures, including codes of practice. Further information on these can be found on the Codes of Practice and Regulations page of the Graduate School website.

The Funded Postgraduate Research Scholarships section of the UL Research website provides a means of advertising open positions to prospective students. There are also a number of external sites which advertise open PhD positions such as PhD Ireland.

Further information on the supervision of postgraduate students can be found on the Graduate School website.
