Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Call for Research Proposals
Specifics: 

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland, invites applications for its competitive call for research proposals. This supports research projects that respond to meeting agri-food and bioeconomy challenges and goals by directing the scientific ambition and strengthening the existing national knowledge base. The goal is to maximise the economic and societal impact of the state funded research and innovation and resources by developing and deepening effective research collaborations in and leveraging of additional national and EU funds through DAFM’s three competitive programmes: food Institutional Research Measure; Research Stimulus Fund; Programme of Competitive Forest Research for Development. This call is divided into several research topics that fall under the following thematic areas:

•Environment and Climate Smart Approaches to Agri-Food Systems;

•Animal and Plant Production, One Health and Welfare;

•Rural Growth, Digitalisation and the Bio-economy;

•Food.

The call topics are designed to inform policy or develop processes and technologies that will help address challenges and opportunities identified in various strategic reports or policy documents.

DAFM and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland have agreed a co-funding arrangement to facilitate the involvement of Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute, Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University as partners in applications to selected topics.

DAFM-approved research performing organisation may apply.

The level of funding depends on the nature of the project and the proposed funding instrument. Proposals may use the following instruments: research plus, for projects worth up to €100,000 for up to one year; desk study, for projects worth up to €150,000 for up to one year; small project, for projects worth up to €250,000 for up to two years; standard project, for projects worth up to €600,000 for up to four years; large project, for projects worth up to €1.25 million for up to four years; programme, for projects worth up to €3m for up to five years; innovation platform, for projects worth up to €5m for up to five years. The co-funding arrangement with DAERA is limited to applications under desk study, small project, standard project, large project and programme instruments.
