Ms. Aoife Gallagher

Biography

Dr Aoife Gallagher qualified as an SLT at Trinity College Dublin. In 2005 she was awarded a Masters with distinction in Human Communication from the University College London. She worked as an SLT and as a health services manager across a range of healthcare settings prior to taking up a lecturing and research role in the School of Allied Health at the University of Limerick. In 2015, Aoife was awarded a HRB-funded scholarship to complete a PhD in Health Services Research as part of the SPHeRE Programme which she completed in 2019. She is currently leading on an Implementation Science research project in collaboration with Newcastle University.

Research Interests

Aoife's main research focus is to improve outcomes for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs in school. Her PhD work involved engaging stakeholders in the development of principles for best collaborative practice in school.
Aoife has a particular interest in child voice. She co-developed a framework for participation, adapted from the field of inclusive education, for use in schools when supporting children who have SLCN with researchers from QUT, Australia.
She was an invited member of an international consortium (CATALISE) led by the University of Oxford, aimed at agreeing terminology and diagnostic criteria for children and young people with DLD.
She is actively engaged in building a network of communication champions across Ireland in asscociation with the HSE, the HEIs and the Irish Association of SLTs, to facilitate uptake of the findings from CATALISE into SLT practice.
Aoife is PI for a HRI funded project aimed at establishing the feasibility of a communication friendly classroom tool for use in Irish classrooms. Aoife is also involved in a multi-phased study, funded by the NISE, focused on enhancing inter-professional education opportunitites across HEIs for SLTs and teachers in training.

Teaching Interests

Aoife is Course Director for the Postgraduate Masters in Speech and Language Therapy at UL. She has taught a range of discipline specific topics (Linguistics, Preschool & School-Aged Language, Clinical Reasoning, Audiology for SLTs, SLCN in Special Populations). She contributes to the teaching of inter-professional modules across the School of Allied Health (Preparation for Practice, Engaging with Complexity, Innovations in HealthCare, Research Methods). Aoife is a visiting lecturer at Mary Immaculate College, contributing to the PG Diploma in Inclusive and Special Education, and the B.Ed in Inclusive Education. Aoife is currently undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching, Learning and Scholarship at UL. She has a specific interest in IPE and in methods of enhancing student's assessment and feedback literacy.
