Biography

Barbara Lloyd is a lecturer in midwifery at the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Limerick. She is a registered general nurse, midwife and tutor. Barbara worked in a variety of gynaecology settings in London and it was from there that her interest in women's health stemmed. Barbara then became a midwife as she was very interested in the area of fertility and pregnancy. She has worked as a community midwife in the UK and Ireland and has extensive experience in this area. Barbara commenced her teaching career as a midwifery tutor in the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital in 1999 in Dublin. She then moved to the National Maternity Hospital in 2000 and took up the position as midwifery tutor in the School of Midwifery. In 2006 Barbara moved to University College Dublin and took up the position of lecturer in midwifery until July 2020. Barbara was the project lead from University College Dublin until July 2020 on the National Midwifery Competency Assessment Tool working group (NMBI). She is passionate about midwifery education and believes that through education and excellent clinical teaching of students, midwifery students will develop into competent, confident practitioners. Barbara's clinical interest's is in fertility, pregnancy, birth and into motherhood. Up until 2021 Barbara was a International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and has worked in private practice for over fourteen years. Barbara is also a qualified acupuncturist and Chinese medical herbalist and is very interested in the area of complementary therapies. Barbara's research interests are in the area of women's health mainly fertility, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Her focus is on the use of complementary therapies mainly acupuncture, aromatherapy and mindfulness to alleviate certain conditions.
