Dr Martin Cunneen currently works on a number of EU Commission funded research projects relating to risk, ethics & anticipatory governance of emerging technology. These include the VI-DAS & Cloud-LSVA consortia and I have contributed to several work packages regarding risk, ethics and governance.
My research and project contributions are founded upon developing a cross-discipline analytical approach to socio-technological risk, ethics and governance challenges. This centres on mixing several knowledge domains from analytical philosophy (Wittgensteinian Polythetic Methods and Metaphilosophical critique) to further adapt methodological insights. The telos of this methodological critique is to interrogate new hybrid non-linear methods of analysis that can support more accurate and timely conceptual framing and engagement with emerging intelligence technologies and use cases. The focus on conceptual accuracy and meaning is the basis of the development of further methods focusing on using the conceptual tools to more accurately capture important socio-tech ontological relations, in terms of risk and ethical analysis. The critical engagement regarding methods supports more informed construction and application of analytical methods that can be refined to adapt to new and emerging innovation and socio-technological use cases. Moreover, the meta approach to socio-technological meanings and framings offers valuable insights to existent challenges in the philosophy of technology, philosophy of data and AI.
The aim is to develop analytically informed frameworks that offer conceptual rigour but can also maintain the rigour while adapting the use to the dynamics of emerging technologies. Such frameworks provide analytical apparatus to support existing anticipatory governance frameworks. The analytical context is remixed with teaching applied ethics to health care professionals for over 8 years. I have had the opportunity to teach across a broad spectrum of modules ranging from philosophy, applied ethics, risk and governance to AI risk and ethics. Current lecturing duties centre on the subject of Risk and Governance (IN4007) focusing on Emerging Technologies. I'm fortunate to be the module leader tasked with designing and delivering a module on AI Risk/Ethics on National M.Sc. in AI (IN5103). This was a great opportunity to engage with leading industry professionals from many AI domains. I'm also module leader on the new Business Analytics MSc, again this was an opportunity to design and deliver a new module (IN6062) investigating the risk and governance around data analytics. My previous work has ranged from commercial ICT projects, community based technology programs, to consulting on Big Data analytics projects. My current research focuses on the ethics of driverless car decision ontologies, machine morality, data privacy & philosophy of AI.
- Philosophy of Technology: I often focus on philosophical contexts and questions around framing socio-technological risk relations to develop alternative framings.
Metaphilosophy: A key part of my research concerns conceptual relations and the development of Wittgenstein's Metaphilosophical insights to questions of framing emerging technologies.
Descriptive Ethics: In contrast to prescriptive ethics my research focuses on developing relational methodologies to elucidate the ethical phenomenon in order to support more context specific anticipatory governance frameworks.
Risk: My research combines methodologies to elucidate and investigate conceptual and ontological relations between technological use case of AI and surrounding stakeholders in terms of risk relations.
Governance: It is often stated that governance is outpaced by innovation and governance gaps introduce new socio-technological risks. My current research focuses on mapping what I frame as the new governance eco-system as a multi-layered knowledge dependent risk mitigation phenomenon. Thus, I focus on the conceptual elucidation of the risk phenomenon in terms of relational methodologies.
