Biography
Dr. Máirtín Ó Droma, BE, PhD, CEng, FIET, SMIEEE.
A UCD engineering ('73) and PhD ('78) graduate, Dr. Ó Droma, is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and a Chartered Engineer (UK&Ireland). An academic in the University of Limerick (UL) since 1984, he is a Senior Lecturer in the Electronic & Computer Engineering Dept., Director of the Telecommunications Research Centre, and UL Governing Authority member. He is an IEEE Subject Matter Expert; an Invited Expert of the United Nations' International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Geneva; Chairman of the Royal Irish Academy's (RIA) Communications and Radio Science Committee; Member, RIA Engineering and Computer sciences Committee; and President of the Official Commission Members Ireland, International Union of Radio Science (URSI). He was a Founding Partner and Steering Committee Member of a number of European Union's R&D framework Programme projects such as TARGET' Networks of Excellence Top Amplifier Research Groups in a European Team; and ANWIRE Academic Network for Wireless Internet Research in Europe.' He has served as Ireland's delegate to several European Science Foundation (ESF) Cooperation in the field of Science and Technology (COST) Research Actions; examples include: Algorithms, architectures and platforms for enhanced living environments (AAPELE (IC1303; 2013-17); 'Wireless networking for moving objects,' WiNeMO (IC0906); 'RF/microwave communication subsystems for emerging wireless technologies' RFCSET (IC0803); Traffic and QoS management in wireless multimedia networks (COST 290); and Modeling and simulation tools for research in emerging multi-service telecommunications (COST 285); and as UL's delegate to Ireland's national PRTLI-5 Telecommunications Graduate Initiative (TGI). Other responsibilities include: the Management Committee member, Castleville Study Centre, Limerick; Director ODR Patents; Guest editor of a number of journals; and technical programme committee member, proceedings book editor, etc for several IEEE, other international, and national research conferences.
His research interests include:
- In telecommunication networks: Wireless network and protocol infrastructural innovations for next generation networks (NGNs), the Ubiquitous Consumer Wireless World (UCWW), Cognitive Networks, software define radio (SDR), Internet of Things (IoT); mobile cloud communications and service; & Internet tomography.
- In RF microwave and millimeterwave circuits and systems: behavioural modelling of complex wireless telecommunication systems and subsystems especially linearization & energy efficiency issues in wireless multimode, multiband, multicarrier broadband nonlinear RF power amplifiers for LTEa & other advanced wireless communications interfacces.
- He also has research interests in mobile wireless eLearning technology and systems.
He is author/co-author for over 180 research publications including books, book chapters, and specialist papers in international learned journals and conference proceedings.
