Dr Wijnand Van Tilburg

Biography

I received my Bachelors and Research Masters degrees in social psychology from Tilburg University in 2006 and 2008. In 2011, I completed my PhD degree at the University of Limerick, investigating the psychological signature and consequences of boredom. At present, I am a lecturer in psychology (assistant professor) at the University of Limerick.

My research mainly concerns social cognition, emotion, and experimental existential psychology. A major focus of my research involves the study of boredom, and how this experience affects phenomena such as aggression, intergroup processes, memory, and prosocial behavior. A reoccurring theme throughout this research is the notion that boredom motivates people to reaffirm the meaningfulness of their actions, which can lead to both desirable and undesirable outcomes, depending on context.

Besides research on boredom, I am also involved in research on the effects of loneliness, life and mortality salience, authenticity, problem solving, and appraisals of behaviors associated with goal pursuit.
