Dr. Nikola Nikolov

Biography

Dr. Nikola S. Nikolov is an academic staff member of the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) at the University of Limerick, Ireland. Dr. Nikolov is a co-founder and a co-chair of the bi-weekly Big Data Analytics research meeting at CSIS since January 2013. He is also collaborating with Lero (The Irish Software Engineering Research Centre), TRC (Telecommunications Research Centre) and IDC (Interaction Design Centre) at the University of Limerick. 

Dr. Nikolov has a B.Sc./M.Sc. in Informatics (Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, 1995) and a PhD in Theoretical Computer Science (University of Limerick, 2002). In 2004/2005 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the IMAGEN group at National ICT Australia (NICTA). The biggest impact of his research work has been in the employment of combinatorial optimisation techniques for hierarchical (layered) graph drawing as well as in visual analytics for large and complex networks. At present, Dr. Nikolov supervises three PhD projects in the area of visual analytics and co-supervises a PhD project in the area of personalised information retrieval and context-aware systems.

Currently, Dr. Nikolov teaches Database Systems, Data Mining and Data Warehousing, and Virtual Worlds at UL. He also acts as a Course Director for the Graduate Diploma in Computing programme at UL.
