Dr. Brendan Florio

Biography

I am postdoctoral researcher in Applied mathematics. I completed my PhD in 2013 at the University of Western Australia, Perth. My main interests lie in nonlinear dynamics and industrial modelling. My current interests include:

  • Mathematical modelling of continuous casting. We use asymptotic methods to show the effect of an air gap on the solidification process.
  • Modelling of melting nanowires. Particles at the nanoscale have a depressed melting point, which can seriously restrict their application. We use mathematical modelling to describe the melting behaviour of nanowires
  • The interaction of convection modes in porous media. For a square domain multiple modal solutions may be preferred. These modes interact in a nonlinear fashion and may form interesting patterns.

In 2015 I was awarded a Charlemont Scholarship by the Royal Irish Academy, which allowed me to travel to Barcelona to collaborate with colleagues on the nanowire project.

I am a part of the Athena Swan commitee for the department of Mathematics and Statistics. Our department was recognised with the Athena Swan Bronze award in 2015.
