Dr. Arlene Mc Curtin

Biography

I am currently involved in the following research projects:

  • HIST (Health Implementation Scence & Technology) Research Group. Funded by the Health Research Institute, University of Limerick
  • RRR (Rapid Resource Repository for Health Professionals). Funded by the Health Research Board. Aim: To provide a rapid online resource meet the support and information needs of returning to work /new to work/ re-assigned nursing and allied health professionalsduring COVID-19.
  • iFLAG (Integrated Feedback for Learning & Growth). Funded by the IUA National Forum for Teaching & Learning.Aim: To implement online integrated feedback for health professional students to improve learning and growth.
  • EVBRES (Evidence Based Research). Funder by the European COST ACTION network. Aim: To disseminate and embed the evidence based research approach in decision making amongst funders, ethics bodies, patient organisations and scientific journals.
  • RASHID (Providing reasonable adjustments in health care delivery for people with intellectual disabilities within an acute hospital setting).Funded by Health Research Institute Health Implementation Science & Technology Research Cluster. Aim: To identify the factors that promote/compromise the implementation of reasonable adjustments/services for persons with intellectual disability (ID) in an acute hospital.
  • CADILAC - Communication and digital inclusion and learning in ageing communities
  • IMPMAP- Using implementation science frameworks to map intervention adoption in clinical practice.
  • SENSID (Sensory Interventions in Dysphagia). Aim: To explore and develop evidence for taste-based sensory interventions in dysphagia.
  • RESSIG (The development of a clinician-academic research network supported by the Irish Association of Speech & language Therapists.

Research Interests

I am interested in how knowledge is generated, used, valued and interpreted and this translates into research interests in:

  • Patient involvement and communication in health care (minimally disruptive healthcare, patient evidence, communication in healthcare, shared decision making);
  • Clinical practice (bases of clinical decision making, implementation science);
  • Epistemology (evidence based practice, science and pseudoscience, evidence anthologies);
  • Metaresearch ( research on research, document content analyses), and;
  • I have a specialist interest in Dysphagia (swallowing disorders) specifically bolus modification techniques including thickened liquids and sensory and chemesthetic stimuli.
