RTÉ News anchor Bryan Dobson has been appointed as Adjunct Professor of Public Service Broadcast Journalism. Mr Dobson, who is main anchor of the flagship Six One News programme on RTÉ One television, is one of the most respected broadcasters in Ireland. He will take up his appointment on September 1 for a three-year period.
This is an honorary position and Mr Dobson will continue to work for the State broadcaster RTÉ.
Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan TD, officially launched the award-winning Graduate Entry Medical School at the University of Limerick. The Building was designed by Grafton Architects, and was the winner of RIBA 2013 EU Award and a finalist in the highly prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize. Located beside the existing Health Sciences and Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, the Medical School is easily distinguishable by its limestone exterior and is a stand-out addition to UL’s Clare Campus.
Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, which is supported by Science Foundation Ireland, has won industry commitments worth in excess of €400,000 for software modernisation programmes.
“The reality is that there is a lot of old software out there which is still at the heart of many critical applications, particularly in the area of financial transactions. For example, more than 50 years after the COBOL language was invented, the stark fact is that there are 200 times more COBOL transactions daily than Google searches,” commented Professor Brian Fitzgerald, Chief Scientist, Lero.
The Kemmy Business School, UL hosted a conference exploring the impact of austerity on society. ‘Austerity: Economic, Political, and Social Perspectives’.

Dr. Mark Southern, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Limerick has won the inaugural Knowledge Transfer Ireland Research2Business Award. The inaugural Knowledge Transfer Ireland (KTI) Research2Business award recognises excellence in engagement between researchers and the business community. The award was presented by Sean Sherlock T.D. Minister for Research & Innovation at the launch of the office of Knowledge Transfer Ireland and its web-portal, the first resource of its kind in Europe which took place in Dublin today (28th May 2014).
Research projects in the areas of maths, pharmaceuticals and composite materials at the University of Limerick have been awarded over €4million in SFI funding it has been announced. The announcement cements UL’s reputation as a center for excellence in translational research, focused on delivering real impact for Irish industry.
UL spin-outs have raised in excess of €80 million investment with the generation of over 260 jobs.
The University of Limerick continues to build on the success of its spin-out activity having reached a milestone of over €80 million funding with 260 jobs created to date. In recent years, the University has seen growth in top spin-out companies including: Stokes Bio, Crescent Diagnostics, Poly-Pico Technologies, Cauwill Technologies, Powervation, LearnOpt and Biomass Heating Solutions among others. The University today (Thursday 1st May) marked this milestone by hosting the UL Innovation Awards held at Plassey House.
The University of Limerick and Pieta House were recently awarded funding from the Irish Research Council to conduct a study into how communities are impacted by the opening of a Pieta House centre in their area. The research project aims to provide evidence that open and visible access to services such as Pieta House can change perceptions around suicide and self-harm, leading to increased health and wellbeing within the entire community in which the service is based.
Director of Pfizer Process Development Centre, Dr. Liam Tully has been appointed as Adjunct Professor of Pharmaceutical Innovation at the University of Limerick. The Adjunct Professor position results from Liam’s extensive work and continued efforts in building collaborations between the pharmaceutical industry and academia in Ireland. The Adjunct Professor role will ensure closer collaboration and increased input from industry in the educational development of students and the important Research Programmes ongoing in the University of Limerick in support of the Irish pharmaceutical industry.
The milestone amount is reached as the Clinical Therapies Department celebrate 10 Years. The Department of Clinical Therapies at the University of Limerick hosted a showcase of current research by faculty and students in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Department. Since 2006, over €3million in competitive research grants has been awarded to staff within Clinical Therapies at UL, across the three disciplines of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy.
