Dr. Eileen Carey
Biography
Eileen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Education and Health Sciences at the University of Limerick. Prior to entering academia, Eileen worked as a Registered Nurse (Intellectual Disability), with people with intellectual disabilities and their families in a variety of contexts and settings. Eileen is a BSc. (Nursing Studies) graduate of the University of Limerick, a PG Dip. (Nurse Education) and MSc. (Advanced Nursing Studies) graduate of the University of Ulster and a Doctor in Philosophy (PhD) graduate of Trinity College, Dublin.Eileen's research interests focus on developing quality practices to implement evidence-based approaches and initiatives facilitating health and wellbeing of older adults especially those growing older with intellectual disabilities. Specific topic areas have focused on autonomy and assisted decision-making.Research Interests
Eileen's research interests focus on explaining how humanistic, legalistic, psychological and sociological factors impact the health and wellbeing of adults, especially those growing older with intellectual disability. Specific topic areas have focused on person centred planning, autonomy, choice, control, informed consent, decision-making and inclusive research. Eileen has undertaken research studies to describe and analyse structures and processes of person centred planning utilised in residential service for people with intellectual disabilities and research inclusive of adults with intellectual disabilities, to explain daily realities for participants as they respond to issues of choice and control. Eileen has been involved in a national Leadership Programme for Nursing and Health Care Managers in Intellectual Disability Services educational and research project and is currently leading a national research project reviewing placement opportunities accessible to students undertaking a BSc Nursing (Intellectual Disability) degree programme in Ireland. Eileen is a member of the Ageing, Research and Intellectual Disability Group and the Health Research Institute at the University of Limerick.Professional Activities
