Outcomes for children in care in Ireland and the UK remain consistently poor despite decades of attempts to improve their trajectories.

The charity, Compass CFS, utilises social pedagogy in exploring ways of looking after children and young people that truly nurtures their needs and potential in ways that resist the dominant discourses of reward and punishment that many services for children are based upon. Children in care are likely to have experienced trauma and abuse and their reactions to the world are frequently trauma based - behaviourist approaches can punish this trauma and, inadvertently cause more harm. The conference aims to showcase alternatives for working with children including trauma informed approaches and social pedagogical frameworks.
