On our campus or in your office, MDU will deliver accredited management programmes designed to give your workforce—and thereby your organisation — a competitive edge. We can tailor our programmes to suit your sector and objectives, and deliver the
course when it suits you and your employees. We also welcome employees in our scheduled programmes, where they receive the same progressive, relevant education and can benefit from the diverse experience of their peers.
Since 2006 the MDU has delivered management and leadership training to team leaders working in residential and day care settings.
Team leaders working across National Federation of Voluntary Bodies member organisations play a critical role in terms of HR and leadership development within their respective organisations. These leaders required competency development in a range of key management areas, so the MDU designed a comprehensive programme to empower managers and supervisors through better planning, control and evaluation of both their personal work and that of the teams they are responsible for managing.
This practical programme features continuous assessment with learning objectives tied to participants’ specific organisational settings. Modules focus on essential skills, such as carrying out annual performance and development reviews, daily feedback, personal time management, managing change, delegation, motivation and commitment. A particular feature of the programme is the focus on high quality service provision which aims to ensure that individuals supported receive the highest quality services, services which are person centred and centrally focused on the needs of the individual.
Upon completion of the programme, learners have a better understanding of their roles and how to implement motivation techniques to gain commitment from their teams. Feedback from team leaders has also indicated that undertaking the programme enabled them to manage more effectively within the regulatory environment and to support staff to manage the impact of external change.
We have had a very successful collaboration with the MDU in UL for the past decade. We initially chose the MDU because of their expertise and track record in providing tailored programmes to meet the needs of particular sectors. We have found the MDU to be excellent partners in the development and delivery of our customised training programmes with the staff involved being exceptionally professional and responsive to our requirements. Graduates of the management programmes which we have run to date have indicated that they have benefitted hugely from the training undertaken - both in terms of securing a recognised and highly valued qualification but also in developing set skills which have assisted many graduates to advance in their chosen careerJillian Sexton HR & Training Development Co-ordinator, National Federation of Voluntary Bodies
In 2014 Aughinish Alumina were reviewing their managerial development strategy for new and existing middle and seniors managers with a view to upskilling them to face what is an extremely competitive global market. The company was seeking better, more effective and more efficient ways to do business and more productive communication and managerial methods. While many managers had years of experience, technical engineering qualifications and expertise, they lacked the formal management development training or education to support them in achieving their non-technical personal and organisational goals.
For managers who met the minimum requirements, the MDU BA in General Management offered the perfect solution. With modules focused on continuous improvement, planning, change management and integration, as well as other practical management education, the programme helped Aughinish Alumina to develop a competitive edge through their management teams.
To date 11 managers at Aughinish Alumina have completed the one-year, fully accredited BA programme. A key benefit for the company has been improved cohesion among departmental managers from the cross-functional learning. Working together on the course has transferred to working more closely together on the site and has encouraged social learning related to company culture and norms.
Aughinish Alumina maintained their competitiveness throughout the change process and are now working with the MDU to develop a follow-on programme specifically focused on change, leadership, motivation and management development for front-line managers.
The level of service and support that I and my colleagues received from the Management Development Unit of the University of Limerick was incomparable. Our experience was very beneficial to us, as the knowledge gained was both theoretical and practical, transmitted by lecturers who are experts in their field and understand the business world. The lecturers link theory and practice by illustrating their courses with examples from their own professional experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Management Development Unit of the University of Limerick.Avril Glynn Human Resources and Community Affairs Coordinator, Aughinish Alumina
In 2016, Kostal worked in conjunction with UL to refresh and develop their front-line supervisors who had been working in leadership roles for many years.
The company worked closely with the MDU’s tutors and course director to develop a programme with a combination of modules focused on change management and the overall development of management capabilities.
The programme provided learners with a comprehensive range of management skills as well as techniques to improve individual, team and organisational performance. Participating supervisors and leaders learned to harness interpersonal skills and confidence to achieve personal targets and goals.
The course was delivered to a high standard with high quality tutors. We felt the content had the correct balance of theory and practical elements to ensure learning took place. Backup material and support was given to complete project work. Staff were always friendly and very quick to respond to any queries; first class individual attention was provided, as required. It has been a pleasure to deal with Management Development Unit at UL.Anne Murphy Training Officer, Kostal Ireland GmbH
