What to expect in the Library this year

Following the new regulations, library access is limited this semester, access to the library is by seat booking only

Covid-19 has necessitated a number of changes to library services this year.

The following information outlines what to expect when visiting the library building in semester 1.  These measures are subject to change and students should check the library website regularly for updates or follow us on InstagramTwitter and Snapchat for updates.

Key changes at a glance

  • Students must book their visit to the library in advance, beginning from Week 1
  • Face coverings must be worn at all times in the library
  • A one-way system is in place throughout the building
  • Study spaces are 2 metres apart and should be wiped down before and after use
  • The library is for individual study only, group spaces are not available for collaborative study
  • Returned books are quarantined for 3 days
  • Borrowing entitlements have increased to 10 books for 28 days for UGs and 20 books for 28 days for PGs
  • There are no fines this year but students must return overdue books before borrowing more items
  • Short loans have been integrated into the main collections
  • Food and drinks other than water are no longer permitted
  • Help is available via Ask Us, student peer advisors, how-to videos, subject guides and virtual workshops
  • Students are advised to use the virtual library of electronic books, journals and online help from off-campus where possible.

Covid safety measures

Face coverings are mandatory in the library for the duration of your stay, unless you have an HSE exemption.

Social distancing

  • Study spaces have been reduced and spaced out to allow for social distancing
  • One way system is in operation throughout the building
  • Group work is not permitted in the library
  • Maximum occupancy levels have been set for all rooms including bathrooms

Cleaning and hand sanitiser

  • Use available hand sanitiser when entering the library, before and after touching books, using the computers or the printer/copiers.
  • Cleaning in the library has been increased and the library will receive an Eco Statics sanitisation once a week.
  • Students are asked to clean down their study space before and after use, using materials provided.

Food and drink

  • Food, snacks and hot drinks are not permitted in the library.
  • Bottled water is allowed in reusable bottles and water fountains are available for refilling on each floor.

Borrowing & returning

Please return your books on the Monday of your on campus week so that they can be available for borrowing by the end of the week.

This is because all returned books will be quarantined for 72 hours prior to re-shelving. This, together with the on/off campus teaching schedule will mean that access to the library’s printed books will be limited.  Students are advised to use the virtual library of electronic books, journals and online help from off-campus where possible.

In response to Covid restrictions we have made some changes to borrowing entitlements and loan periods as follows:

Undergraduates 10 books 28 days
Postgraduates 20 books 28 days
  • Fines will not be charged this year
  • Students may not borrow items if they have overdue books
  • Short loan books have been integrated with the main collections
  • It is not possible for borrowers to renew items or to reserve books

Borrow books using the self-issue machines, wipe down touch points before and after use

Getting Help

Help is available via Ask Us, student peer advisors, how-to videos, subject guides and virtual workshops.

Student Peer Advisors will be available to help you navigate the new way of using the library and assist you with using the library facilities and technology.

Staff services are primarily virtual this year. Staff will endeavour to answer your queries virtually and are on hand to come to the Desk if face-to-face interaction is required.
