What to expect in the Library this year

The library building is open for UL students and staff with no requirment to pre-book a library visit, however ID cards are required to access through the library gates.

These measures are subject to change and students should check the library website regularly for updates or follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat for updates.  

The library has put together a short video to outline what students & staff can expect when using the library this year.

Key changes at a glance

  • Students are advised to use the virtual library of electronic books, journals and online help where possible. 
  • Consult the 'Getting started in the Library' page if a first-time library user.
  • Group study rooms are available to book.
  • UL Student/Staff ID cards are required to access the library. 
  • Face coverings must be worn properly at all times in the library
  • A one-way system is in place throughout the building. 
  • Food is not permitted, only drinks in a reusable cup/bottle.  
  • Borrowing entitlements have increased to 10 books for UGs and 20 books for PGs. 
  • The library is no longer charging fines; however, your library account will be blocked if you do not return library material on time. Please ensure you renew or return items on time. 
  • Short loans have been integrated into the main collections. 
  • The Inter-library Loans (ILL) service has resumed. 
  • Help is available via CHATAsk Us, student peer advisors, how-to videossubject guidesworkshops and in person at the Information Desk. 
  • There is no access at present to external visitors. 

Virtual Library

The Virtual library is available 24/7 to UL students and staff and is accessible from the library website.  To access library resources remotely log in to the remote access service using your UL network ID and password.   

With access to over 450,000+ ebooks we encourage you to use ebooks and online articles for your assignments - search the library catalogue.

Students can connect to their Reading Lists through the VLE (SULIS or Moodle) to access full-text items recommended for their modules – books, articles, videos and webpages. 

Librarians will deliver workshops online, and where possible, in person, visit our calendar of events for further details.  The library YouTube channel has many useful 'how to' videos.

Visiting the library building

From 22nd October we have removed the requirement to pre-book your visit to the library, however you will need your ID card to access in though the gates 

You will still need to book the group study rooms online up to 2 days in advance, and for a max of 2 hours.  

Contact Special Collections & Archives regarding access and availability of material.  

Covid safety measures

Face coverings are mandatory in the library and must be worn properly for the duration of your visit.

Social distancing 
  • Study spaces have been reduced and spaced out to allow for social distancing. 
  • One way system is in operation throughout the building.
  • Group work is not permitted in the library.
  • Furniture should not be moved.
  • Maximum occupancy levels have been set for all rooms. 
 Cleaning and hand sanitiser  
  • Use available hand sanitiser when entering the library, before and after touching books, using the computers or the printer/copiers. 
  • Cleaning in the library has been increased and the library will receive an Eco Static sanitisation once a week.  
  • Students are asked to clean down their study space before and after use, using materials provided 
 Food and drink  
  • Food and snacks are not permitted in the library.  
  • Drinks are allowed in reusable bottles/cups and water fountains are available for refilling on each floor.  Please wear your mask in-between drinking.

Borrowing & returning

Students are advised to use the virtual library  of electronic books, journals and online help where possible. 

We have made some changes to borrowing entitlements and loan periods as follows: 

Undergraduates 10 books 28 days
Postgraduates 20 books 28 days
  • Fines are no longer charged – your library account will be suspended if you have overdue library material. 
  • Library users may not borrow items if they have overdue books.  
  • Short loan books have been integrated with the main collections.
  • The ILL service has resumed.
  • Borrowers can once again renew items and/or reserve books. Items may be recalled too. 
  • Laptops may be borrowed for 4 hours in the library.  
  • Borrow books using the self-issue machines, wipe down touch points before and after use. 
  • Please return items via the book sorter ‘slots’ within the library on the ground floor or at the drop-box in the entrance of the library.

Help is available via Ask Us, student peer advisors, how-to videos, subject guides and workshops
Student Peer Advisors will be available to help you navigate the library and assist you with using the library facilities and technology.

Wi-Fi, IT and other services in the library building

IT Services  
  • Select eduroam  in your device settings to connect to Wi-Fi in the library. 
  • PC’s in the library have been reduced to allow for 1 meter social distancing.   
  • Access to PC study spaces and printer/scanners is via the library’s seat booking system. 
  • Check the location and availability of PCs in labs across campus by clicking here.   
  • Access IT services virtually by logging a call at or email ITD staff are available to assist you in the library building.

The Glucksman Library provides bookable spaces designed to meet contemporary teaching and learning styles

  • There are currently four meeting/training rooms that can by booked by faculty & staff for learning purposes
