Author: Ashlin Hayes
When: Thursday, September 22, 2022 - 17:45

The Glucksman Library is running a number of workshops for researchers and faculty this semester.

We invite you to register for as many of the events below as you wish to attend and contact the library if you have queries. A full list of library training activities can be viewed on our events calendar.

September & October workshops include:

Research Data Management (in-person)

The workshop will enable the participants to plan their data management according to FAIR data principles from the start of their research projects.  The hands-on planning exercise will be based on research projects of the participants. It will be particularly useful to researchers required to hand in a Data Management Plan with a funding agency but will benefit any researcher who wants to check their data workflows against best practices.

Tidy Data in Spreadsheets (in-person)

This workshop will teach “tidy” data practices in spreadsheets, structuring data in a machine-readable way to maximize the utility of the data. The training covers good data entry and formatting practices, basic quality control and data manipulation in spreadsheets and approaches to avoid problems with dates as data. Demonstrations and explanations will be alternating with small hands-on exercises done by the participants on their own with an example data set.

Python Introduction (in-person)

Python is a general-purpose programming language widely used in data analysis and visualisation. This in-person training is aimed at researchers with no previous programming experience. The workshop will make participants familiar with the underlying concepts and principles, enable them to write basic scripts, and understand and re-use scripts written by others. Finally, it will lay the foundations for further self-guided engagement with programming.

OpenRefine is a powerful free and open-source tool specifically designed to effectively clean, structure, enrich, and format (tabular) data. The training will introduce the basic functions of OpenRefine, show ways to identify and corrected errors in data sets and teach how to format data in a consistent and machine-readable way. Demonstrations and explanations will be alternating with small hands-on exercises done by the participants on their own machines with an example data set. This workshop will be useful for any researcher working with large tabular data sets.
