Academic Requirements


The Erasmus/Exchange academic placement may only be undertaken if the student meets the minimum academic requirements to progress to the next year. The required standard is a minimum cumulative QCA of 2.00 or greater, with no deficient grades (F, I, NG, N).
Students in the first or final year of their degree programme may not take part in the ERASMUS+ programme.
Students who are due to start an Erasmus/Exchange mobility period in the Autumn semester and are to sit repeat examinations at UL in August are advised not to travel until the Repeat examination results are published. Students who do not pass the Repeat examinations may not undertake the Erasmus/Exchange placement.

For ‘voluntary’ placements (e.g. Business studies, Irish Music and Dance, Architecture), students are advised to consult the UL Erasmus Academic Coordinator as specific selection criteria, such as a minimum QCA requirement, may apply.

Learning Agreement

Before going on Erasmus/Exchange, you should consult the UL Academic Coordinator to discuss the programme of study and complete the Learning Agreement. You must submit a copy of the agreement, with provisional module selection, to the International Education Division (IED). The original agreement with you to the host university for approval of modules, after which you return it to IED. On arrival at the host university, you must make contact with the local Academic Coordinator to confirm the selection of courses and examination procedures.

Should you wish to make changes to the Learning Agreement, the amended agreement, signed by the Academic Coordinator at the host university, must be returned to the International Education Division.

The following academic regulations apply to students participating in the Erasmus+ programme:
• Students are required to take 30 ECTS credits per semester. Results achieved will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis or quality-graded. Further details and approval of module selection may be obtained from the Erasmus Academic Coordinator responsible for a specific degree programme.


If you are unable to sit exams in the host university, you MUST contact IED and your UL Academic Coordinator before any alternative arrangements can be made. Should alternative arrangements be made, these usually take the form of individual assessments by either the host university lecturer or their UL counterparts.

It is most important to ensure that a transcript of results is forwarded to either your home address or the UL IED as proof of study and examinations. You must submit these exam results to the UL IED as soon as possible upon your return to ensure progression to the following year. It is your responsibility to ensure that results are handed in/posted to IED.

If you find out that you have failed an exam on returning from your placement, you should contact the UL Academic Coordinator as soon as possible with a view to making arrangements for repeat sittings. These can sometimes be arranged to take place at UL at the same time as at the host university. However, you may have to return to the host university to sit these repeat exams.

Extending Your Exchange

Students who wish to extend their placement from one semester to the full academic year must first contact the UL Academic Coordinator and Course Leader. This is to ensure that it is possible from an academic perspective to spend the Spring Semester abroad. Once the Academic Coordinator and Course Leader approve the extension (authorisation by e-mail is acceptable), IED must be notified and will contact the hos tuniversity to ensure that a free place is available for the second semester. Students should provide a list of the modules they intend to take in the Spring semester. The modules need to be comparable to what students would be normally taking as part of their UL degree programme. If the FYP process begins during the Spring semester, students will have to choose a supervisor, submit their brief, etc. while studying abroad.

Any request to extend the duration of the mobility period must be submitted before 31st October.

Students who extend their academic placement to the full academic year should be aware that the Spring semester placement is quality-graded, i.e. the grades obtained abroad will be converted and will impact on the UL QCA, and students are required to take 30 ECTS credits.

Students of International Business should also seek approval from the Cooperative Education office.

Students registered on the BSc in Psychology and BA in Psychology & Sociology do not have the option to extend the placement to a full academic year.

Students who start the Erasmus academic placement in the Spring semester do not have the option to extend the placement to a full academic year.
