Biography

Professor Eoin Devereux

With expertise in popular music and media, Professor Eoin Devereux is a Cultural Sociologist and Creative Writer who teaches at the University of Limerick, Ireland. He is also an Adjunct Professor in Contemporary Culture (focused on fandom and discourse) in the Department of Art, Music and Culture at the University of Jyvasklya, Finland.

His recent publications include:
  • Always Different, Always The Same: Critical Essays on The Fall (2023) co-edited with Martin J. Power, (Rowman and Littlefield International).
  • Dreams: 50 Years of Creativity, Culture and Community at the University of Limerick (2023) co-edited with Joseph O'Connor and Sarah Moore, (Irish Academic Press).
As well as directing the MA in Youth, Community and Social Regeneration, Eoin teaches on the MA in Creative Writing, leading the module Creative Writers in The Community. His publications in the area of popular music include work on The Fall, David Bowie, Morrissey, The Smiths, Joy Division and Damien Dempsey. Devereux's work in the area of Media Sociology continues to focus on media constructions of poverty, homelessness and social welfare. He has also published on community and community development.

His creative writing has been published by The Irish Times, Poetry Ireland and broadcast by RTE Radio. A life-long music fan, Eoin has written the Sleeve Notes for the re-issued versions of The Cranberries' albums 'Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?', 'No Need To Argue' and 'To The Faithful Departed' for Universal Music London. He also wrote the sleeve notes for the 'Remembering Dolores' album released for Record Store Day.

Eoin has collaborated with the renowned artist Gavin Friday on numerous projects including a monthly radio show for the U2 radio station U2X. In 2020, he featured as an interviewee in the Boomtown Rats documentary 'Citizens of Boomtown.'


CREATIVE WRITING

Eoin Devereux's creative writing has been published in The Irish Times; Janus Literary Magazine; The Stony Thursday Book; Southwords; The Ogham Stone; The Poetry Bus; Boyne Berries; Number Eleven; The Bohemyth; The Old Limerick Journal; The HCE Review; The Galway Review and Lit 202. In April 2022, he curated the poetry broadsheet April Is The Cruellest Month for National Poetry Day. The broadsheet includes poetry by Donal Ryan, Denise Chaila, Willzee and Emily Cullen.

  • 'Revolutions' was curated as part of the Poetry Ireland Poetry Jukebox as part of the Centenary of Commemorations located in Galway in Autumn 2023.
  • 'The Bullfield' published in the Poetry Ireland Anthology Vital Signs edited by Martin Dyar in 2022.
  • 'The Bullfield' featured on the Poetry Ireland Podcast Series Words Lightly Spoken in 2020.
  • 'Remnants' published in Issue 10 of the Poetry Bus Magazine in July 2022. ‘Panthera' a poem about the Housing Crisis was broadcast on RTE Radio 1's Poetry Programme in December 2019.
  • 'The Bodhi Tree' published by Hennessy New Irish Writing in the Irish Times in June 2017 and was subsequently shortlisted for a Hennessy Award for Emerging Poetry in 2018.
  • 'Three Bicycles' was broadcast by RTE's Sunday Miscellany, RTE Radio 1 on June 10th 2018.
  • 'Mrs Flood' - broadcast by RTE Radio 1's The Bookshow in December, 2018 and subsequently published in 100 Words, 100 Books by RTE/The O'Brien Press.
  • 'Making A Stand' published by the Irish Times in December 2017.
