I am Dean Lillis, and I am currently serving as the President of the Postgraduate Students’ Union. I am a LL.M in Human Rights Student in Criminal Justice at the University of Limerick.
The University of Limerick has taken a pioneering step by facilitating the establishment of a dedicated Postgraduate Students' Union. It remains autonomous to the UL Students' Union. Both unions perform very valuable roles regarding students’ needs; however, postgraduate students sometimes have very different needs to those of their undergraduate colleagues. The PSU (Postgraduate Students’ Union) was initially formed as the Postgraduate Students’ Association (PSA) in September 2002. Since that time, it has directly represented every postgraduate student that has passed through the doors of UL. The PSA became the PSU in the academic year 2012/13, and has continued to increase its operations.
The PSU represents the postgraduate community in everything from academic issues to helping you adjust to your new surroundings, and as postgrads, you are automatically members of the PSU, as well as the UL Students’ Union. There are a number of designated spaces for postgraduate students: the PSU Common Room, the postgraduate computer and reading rooms in the A block of the Main Building, the Millstream Building, as well as postgraduate room in the Glucksman Library. Directions to all of these places can be found on our website ulpsu.ie along with more information for postgrads.
You are more than welcome to stop by the PSU office at any time if you have any questions or concerns pertaining to absolutely anything. Part of the job of being the President of the PSU, is acting as a veritable signpost for the services available to the students. The role of the President of the PSU is an advocate for the Postgraduate students, bringing our issues, concerns, and recommendations to the relevant authorities. If you are facing academic or personal issues that are overwhelming and confusing, I can listen confidentially, offer support and direct you to the person or teams most qualified to help with the situation. If I do not have the answer, I will do my utmost to find the person you should speak with. As President of the PSU I am your liaison with UL administration and academic personnel. I can work with you if you need to speak with someone over concerns of your masters’ or PhD work, supervisor, progressions or any other academic related issues.
The PSU offers financial support through interest free Hardship Loans and Childcare Bursaries. Please stop by the PSU Office (Located within the PSU Common Room) or send an email to discuss any queries or to ask for an application form.
I look forward to meeting you on campus, at one of our events, or in the PSU for a cup of coffee and a chat. Feel free to contact me on firstname.lastname@example.org
