The Professional Master of Education (Technological Education) is a two-year full-time initial teacher education programme designed to meet the needs of graduates who wish to become post-primary teachers of technology subjects including: Engineering, Technology, Construction Studies, and Design & Communication Graphics.  The programme promotes an interactive and design driven approach to technology education. The programme combines practice-based school placement with interactive lectures and tutorials to provide graduates with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to begin their professional career as a technology teacher.  Applicants must possess a relevant primary degree at 2.2 honours level or higher (Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland or equivalent). Successful completion of a skills test and interview will be a requirement to obtain a place on the programme.

Objectives of the Programme:

• To provide graduates with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to begin their professional career as technology teachers.
• To develop students' pedagogy and teaching skills.
• To encourage students to develop and utilise innovative evaluation and assessment strategies and to become effective facilitators of learning.
• To promote an interactive and design driven approach to technology education.

Programme Content

There is a significant research element to this Master’s degree which is designed to develop students’ critical research literacy skills, to promote teachers as researchers, and to help students apply research to their practice. Linked to the Research and Practice Portfolio module (EN6084), students must also compile a professional portfolio over the course of this two year Master’s degree programme. The professional portfolio is intended to allow students to document their professional growth and the attainment of learning outcomes, as set by the Teaching Council, over the course of their studies.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a 2h2 bachelor degree (Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland or equivalent) in a relevant Engineering/Technology or Construction/Wood technology discipline. For example, those wishing to apply for the Engineering Technology option of the programme must hold a suitable degree in the general area of Manufacturing Engineering/Technology, Mechanical Engineering or a similar area that reflects the content of the Leaving Certificate Engineering/Technology subject. Those applying for the Construction Studies option must also hold a degree in the relevant area. Areas of study include Construction/Building Technology, Architecture, Wood Science, Furniture Design and Civil Engineering.

In line with Teaching Council and HEA protocol, when applying for a place on the Professional Master of Education programme, the PME Applicant is required to make a formal declaration, using a Subject Declaration Form, that he/she:

a) Holds/will hold, by the date of commencement of the PME programme, a level 8 honours degree.
b) Has studied 60 ECTS credits in the relevant subject area(s) as part of their degree (see the link in point (d) below).
c) Has studied higher level degree content related to the subject area(s) in year 3 or 4 of their degree.
d) Has covered, as part of their degree, the mandatory topics/subjects as set out in the Teaching Council subject requirements which can be found at: http://www.teachingcouncil.ie/en/Publications/Registration/Documents/Curricular-Subject-Requirments-after-January-2017.pdf

The Subject Declaration Form for each of the subjects you wish to teach must be fully completed and attached with your application to this programme. 

The PME Applicant is responsible for familiarising himself/herself with the Teaching Council‘s registration requirements including subject specific requirements and for making an accurate declaration of studies undertaken and qualifications achieved.
All applicants who meet the Teaching Council requirements will be called for interview.”

Garda clearance is also a requirement for this programme.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet one of the criteria below (no longer than two years prior to application):
Acceptable English Language qualifications include the following:
• Matriculation examinations from European countries where English is presented as a subject and an acceptable level is achieved
• Irish Leaving Certificate English –Ordinary Level Grade D or above
• TOEFL – 580 (paper based) or 90 (internet based)
• IELTS – Minimum score of 6.5 with no less than 6 in any one component.
• English Test for English and Academic Purposes (ETAPP) – Grade C1
• GCE ‘O’ level English Language/GCSE English Language – Grade C or above
• University of Cambridge ESOL –Certificate of Proficiency in English - Grade C / Certificate in Advanced English Grade A
• GCE Examination Boards – Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations – Grade C / Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate – School Certificate Pass 1-6 / University of London Entrance and School Examinations Council – School Certificate Pass 1-6
