Overview

Application Deadline:  4 March 2018

The Professional Master of Education (Mathematics) is a two-year full-time initial teacher education programme designed to train specialist mathematics teachers for Irish post-primary schools. It facilitates an interactive and imaginative approach to teaching mathematics at post-primary level in order to enhance school students' mathematics learning and performance. Candidates shall normally be required to hold a Level 8 degree (NQAI) (Hons 2.2 or above) having graduated (or about to graduate) from an undergraduate degree programme that is recognised by the Teaching Council for the purposes of pursuing a teaching qualification in mathematics at post-primary level.

The aims of the programme are to ensure that successful graduates

  • achieve a professional qualification in mathematics teaching (post-primary)
  • acquire the extensive and complex integrated knowledge base that is necessary for effective mathematics teaching at second level
  • demonstrate an ability to integrate this mathematics knowledge for teaching into professional practice as novice mathematics teachers
  • achieve a high standard of practical competence in mathematics teaching during their school placement
