The Professional Master of Education (Languages) programme is designed to provide graduates with a professional qualification in language teaching. Graduates will become post-primary teachers of two of the following languages: French, German, Irish, Japanese, Spanish. English as a second language (ESL) is offered as an option on this programme. Applicants are required to hold a level 8 honours degree (2.2 or above) in a relevant discipline. This course will develop students’ understanding of the language-learning process and associated pedagogies. Successful completion of an interview, part of which will be conducted in the proposed languages to be studied, will be a requirement. This programme is designed as follows:

• To provide graduates with a professional qualification in language teaching and to promote the development of students as effective and reflective teachers
• To develop students' understanding of the language-learning process and associated pedagogies
• To provide students with experience of the application of technologies in language learning
• To develop further students' language skills in their chosen language(s), with particular reference to teaching through the target languages and the use of the target language in classroom management
• To develop further students' understanding of socio-cultural aspects of language learning and teaching

Programme Content

Entry Requirements

An Honours degree (2.2 or above) (Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) in a relevant discipline.  An interview in the proposed languages to be studied will be a requirement.  Personal attendance at interview is require.  In line with Teaching Council and HEA protocol, when applying for a place on the Professional Master of Education programme, the PME Applicant is required to make a formal declaration, using a Subject Declaration Form that he/she:

1. Holds/will hold, by the date of commencement of the PME programme, a level 8 honours degree.
2. The qualifying degree must carry at least 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits (or equivalent) per language. In the case of English as a second language (ESL) there is no requirement to have any credits or qualification prior to commencing the programme.
3. Meet the Teaching Council curricular requirements for the chosen languages. There are no curricular requirements for English as a second language.
4. Subject Declaration Form (which is available here) for each of the subjects you wish to teach must be fully completed and attached with your application to this programme.

Please note it is your responsibility to ensure that you fully meet Teaching Council requirements to teach your language subject(s) at second level.  You are required to submit with your application a completed Subject Declaration Form for each of your two languages. There is however no requirement to submit a Subject Declaration Form for English as a Second Language. 

Garda clearance is also required for this programme.

What to Include with your Application

• Qualification transcripts and/or certificates (including certified English translations if applicable)
• English language qualification(s) (if English is not your first language)
• A copy of your birth certificate (long document

• Subject Declaration Form for each of your two languages with the exception of English as a second language. There is no Subject Declaration Form in the case of English as a second language.
• A passport size photograph of yourself

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet one of the criteria below (no longer than two years prior to application):

Acceptable English Language qualifications include the following:

• Matriculation examinations from European countries where English is presented as a subject and an acceptable level is achieved
• Irish Leaving Certificate English –Ordinary Level Grade D or above
• TOEFL – 580 (paper based) or 90 (internet based)
• IELTS – Minimum score of 6.5 with no less than 6 in any one component.
• English Test for English and Academic Purposes (ETAPP) – Grade C1
• GCE ‘O’ level English Language/GCSE English Language – Grade C or above
• University of Cambridge ESOL –Certificate of Proficiency in English - Grade C / Certificate in Advanced English Grade A
• GCE Examination Boards – Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations – Grade C / Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate – School Certificate Pass 1-6 / University of London Entrance and School Examinations Council – School Certificate Pass 1-6
