This is a two-year full-time course of study designed to enable business graduates to become second level teachers of business subjects.  Successful candidates are recognised to teach business subjects across a range of areas including second level education, further education and community settings.  Applicants must possess a NQF level 8 honours primary degree at 2.2 honours level where the holder is required to have studied at least one business subject (Accounting, Business or Economics), representing at least 60 ECTS credits in that subject and 60 ECTS credits in any additional subject (with a minimum 10 ECTS credits undertaken in one’s final years of study in any subject.   These 60 ECTS credits in any one subject must conform to the Teaching Council ‘Subject Declaration Form’ in that subject in order to eventually secure Teaching Council recognition to teach in that subject.  The onus is on the individual applicant to ensure that he/she meets the requirements of the ‘Subject Declaration Form’.

• To provide graduates with a professional qualification for the teaching of Business, Accounting, Economics Business Studies, Enterprise Education and Applied Business courses (dependent on Teaching Council eligibility) all with a strong ICT component.
• To develop students' personal and practical skills to advanced competency.
• To enable students develop, synergise and innovate appropriate business teaching strategies.
• To empower students to develop and utilise broad evaluation and assessment strategies and thereby become effective facilitators of learning

Graduate Profile

Graduates from this course are enabled to teach a wide range of subjects across a number of programmes.  Since its inception, there has been a consistently strong demand for teachers with this qualification.  The majority of Master in Education (Business) graduates opt for teaching in second level schools.  Others have secured employment in the further education sector, international education sector, alternative education sector, community education and adult education settings.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a 2.2 degree (Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland or equivalent) in a relevant Business or Business related discipline.   In line with Teaching Council and HEA protocol, when applying for a place on the Professional Master of Education course, the PME Business applicant is required to make a formal declaration, using a Subject Declaration Form, that he/she:

1. Holds/will hold, by the date of commencement of the PME course, a level 8 honours degree.
2. Has studied 60 ECTS credits in the relevant subject area(s) as part of their degree (see the link in point (4) below).
3. Has studied higher level degree content related to the subject area(s) in year 3 or 4 of their degree.
4. Has covered, as part of their degree, the mandatory topics/subjects as set out in the Teaching Council subject requirements which can be found at:

The Subject Declaration Form (which is available here) for each of the subjects you wish to teach must be fully completed and attached with your application to this course.

Please have the following documents ready to upload with your application:

• Qualification transcripts and awards/certificates
• English language qualification if English is not your first language
• Certified English translations of your transcripts/certificates where the originals are in a language other than English
• A copy of your birth certificate (long document)/passport
• Fully and accurately completed  ‘Subject Declaration Form(s)’ in those subjects you believe you will be qualified in.
• A passport size photograph of yourself.

A primary level 8 degree which has at least one business subject (Accounting, Business or Economics) taken throughout the duration of the degree and which is recognised by the Teaching Council (TC) as acceptable for the teaching of any designated business subject(s) i.e. Accounting, Business, Economics to leaving certificate level and which subject study has a 60 ECTS credit or more weighting.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that his/her primary degree meets the requirements of the Teaching Council of Ireland for the purposes of teaching a business subject or business subjects (i.e. Accounting, Business and Economics and Business Studies).

If invited to interview, personal attendance is required.  Interviews will normally take place from early to mid March, sometimes later.  All interviewees are points ranked based on qualifications, experiences and interview performance.  Offers of places on the course are sequentially made to interview candidates based on points score levels obtained once interviewing is finally completed.  Up to a maximum of twenty four places may be offered.  Please ensure you read the course information sheet. Garda clearance is also required for this programme.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet one of the criteria below (no longer than two years prior to application):

Acceptable English Language qualifications include the following:

• Matriculation examinations from European countries where English is presented as a subject and an acceptable level is achieved
• Irish Leaving Certificate English –Ordinary Level Grade D or above
• TOEFL – 580 (paper based) or 90 (internet based)
• IELTS – Minimum score of 6.5 with no less than 6 in any one component.
• English Test for English and Academic Purposes (ETAPP) – Grade C1
• GCE ‘O’ level English Language/GCSE English Language – Grade C or above
• University of Cambridge ESOL –Certificate of Proficiency in English - Grade C / Certificate in Advanced English Grade A
• GCE Examination Boards – Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations – Grade C / Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate – School Certificate Pass 1-6 / University of London Entrance and School Examinations Council – School Certificate Pass 1-6
