Brief Description

The purpose of this education programme for prescriptive authority is to ensure that upon successful completion the nurse/midwife is equipped with the knowledge, skills and competence to prescribe safely and effectively.

The overall aim of the programme is to develop the nurse/midwives’ professional knowledge and understanding of the professional role within nurse/midwife prescribing.  It aims to develop a nurse/midwife who is competent in medication management within the expanded role of the nurse/midwife. This includes prescribing within the statutory, professional and interdisciplinary framework and achievement of the required learning outcomes and competencies for prescriptive authority as laid out by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)

Programme Content (Semester by semester):

Semester 1

NS5251 Professional, Ethical, Legal and Interpersonal Dimensions to Nurse/Midwife Prescribing

NS5261 Drug Action and Prescribing

NS5271 Systematic Assessment and Evaluation in Patient Care

NS5281 Clinical Practicum in Nurse/Midwife Prescribing 1

Semester 2

NS5282 Clinical Practicum in Nurse/Midwife Prescribing 2

Entry Requirements:

1              Registration as nurse or midwife on the live register of the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland.

2              Minimum of 3 years post-registration clinical experience (the required clinical practice experience must have been gained within the past 5 years with at least one year in the area in which prescribing is proposed and excludes time spent undertaking further post registration programmes).

3              Possession of competencies recognised at Level 8 of the NQAI framework.

4              Demonstration of continuous professional development and ability to study at Level 8.

5              Support from employer and completed Site Declaration Form, signed by the Director of Nursing/Midwifery/Public Health

6              Nomination and confirmation of a designated medical practitioner mentor (completed site declaration form signed by the Medical Practitioner / Mentor) who will provide the student with supervision support and opportunities including shadowing opportunities during the period of the programme.
