The International Day of Sign Languages is a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users.

The 2021 theme, declared by the World Federation of the Deaf, is ‘We Sign For Human Rights’ highlighting how each of us – deaf and hearing people around the world – can work together hand in hand to promote the recognition of our right to use sign languages in all areas of life.

Elaine, who is deaf will talk about her own personal experience and the experience of the deaf community highlighting the issues and barriers that they face.

John will give an “Introduction to the ISL Act and its aftermaths”.  He will also speak about the ISL Act requirements and obligations on public bodies for the provision of Irish Sign Language Services. Both Elaine & John will put forward suggestions on how UL can best support deaf staff and students.
