The Trans 101: Transgender Awareness Training will be delivered by Mx. Alena Kiel (they/them pronouns) who is the UL Student Council LGBTQIA+ representative and a member of the Athena SWAN Trans Committee.
The Trans 101 training is a classroom-based session which includes an explanation of the language we use to differentiate between sex, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation, as well as what life is like for a trans person living in Ireland. The first hour focuses on terminology and language. The second hour focuses on the lived experience and what YOU can do as a member of the UL community to create safe and welcoming environment for transgender, gender diverse, and intersex students and staff. As part of this empowering and informative session, participants will also complete a worksheet situating themselves on spectrums of gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation, encouraging us all to engage thoughtfully and critically with our own standpoints within these identity categories. The aim of the training is to improve knowledge of trans communities, demystify any misunderstandings and build empathy.
