Welcome to Clinical Therapies

Welcome to the Department of Clinical Therapies.

The Department was formed in 2011 and consists of 3 disciplines; Physiotherapy (PT), Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) and Occupational Therapy (OT).

We offer four professional programmes across our three disciplines. The BSc in Physiotherapy is 4 years of study at an undergraduate level. The MSc in Speech and Language Therapy (Professional Qualification) and MSc in Occupational Therapy (Professional Qualification)) are each 2 years of study and the only graduate-entry programmes for these disciplines in Ireland. A new MSc in Physiotherapy (Professional Qualification) will be offered from September 2015. Our programmes have relevant professional body accreditation* (ISCP, IASLT and AOTI) and are currently in the approval process from the new statutory body CORU.

The Department is a welcoming, dynamic department with over 40 staff members - 30 academic, practice education and research staff, 6 administrative and 2 technical officers, all based in a purpose-built Health Science Building on the North campus of the University.

The Department is very research active across three themes

Health & Wellbeing

Professional Practice and Education

Social Inclusion

Researchers in the Department publish regularly in high-impact ISI journals and have a strong track record in securing research funding from national and international funding bodies. Collaboration with other research groups and disciplines locally, nationally and internationally is a feature of the research activity within the department. There are several Postgraduate MSc and PhD students registered in the department and together with a growing postdoctoral and research staff the Department offers excellent support for future researchers in our professions.

The department also offers postgraduate education for qualified practitioners and offers an MSc in Advanced Healthcare Practice. The MSc assists healthcare practitioners to evaluate their practice and extend, or refocus, their skills and knowledge to meet these new challenges in healthcare provision. A suite of postgraduate certificates are also on offer for those who are looking for continuing professional development at a level pre-MSc.
