Doctoral Candidates

Congratulations on the successful completion of your doctoral studies at the University of Limerick. Doctoral conferrings at UL differ from other such conferrings in the country. To ensure that the conferrings proceed as smoothly as possible, you are required to comply with the following instructions:

You will receive written confirmation outlining details of your rehearsal, and you must confirm your intention to attend.  On the day of graduation, you must present yourself for a dress rehearsal prior to your conferring. This is compulsory.  You must wear your robes at the rehearsal.

Please complete and submit this form to confirm your attendance at the dress rehearsal.

Dress Code

Your graduation ceremony is a formal occasion, and we ask you to dress accordingly.

Men must wear a smart suit, shirt and tie and plain black shoes (no boots or runners). Please have your jacket buttoned while you are on stage receiving your parchment.
Women must wear a smart dress or suit (skirt and jacket or trouser suit). Hair pins are useful to secure the mortar board (cap).

Because it might take you some time to become comfortable wearing your robe, hood and mortar board on graduation day, it is important that the rest of your clothing and footwear are comfortable. During the ceremony you will be required to walk up and down steps prior to and during the ceremony so we strongly recommend that you wear appropriate footwear. If you wear high heels, please be sure that you can wear them with confidence walking up and down steps.

International students may wear their national dress under their academic robes. Service personnel may wear their uniforms under their academic robes.

Please note that denim, t-shirts, runners or flip flops should not be worn. Tattoos should be covered. It is best to avoid chunky, noisy jewellery and exaggerated hairstyles.

The University adheres strictly to its dress code and, consequently, only those graduands who are properly attired will be presented to receive their parchments.

If you bring personal items such as a bag or camera to the ceremony, please either give them to your guests to look after or leave them under your seat when you go on stage to receive your parchment.
