Dr. Christine Cross

Biography

Professor Christine Cross is Head of Department, Work and Employment Studies and lectures in Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management at the Kemmy Business School. Prior to joining UL she worked for a number of multinational organisations in both management and human resource management roles. Her research, consultancy and publication interests include the broad area of diversity, including women's labour force participation, the gender pay gap and the workforce experiences of immigrants.

She has published in leading international journals including Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Journal, Journal of Managerial Psychology, Economic and Industrial Democracy, International Journal of Human Resource Management and European Societies Journal. Christine has been successful in securing finding for her research from a number of national and international bodies including the European Commission and Erasmus +. Most recently her research has focused on the role that human resource management processes play in attaining gender balance in senior decision-making roles http://www.gemprogress.com/. She has also co-edited four third level textbooks which are sold internationally. Christine has won a number of awards including the UL Excellence in Teaching Award and the Emerald/European Foundation for Management Development Outstanding Doctoral Research Award.

In 2019 Christine successfully led the Kemmy Business School to becoming the first Business School in Ireland to achieve the Athena SWAN award, and one of only 6 across the UK and Ireland. She is also co-chair of the KBS Equality and Diversity Committee.

Christine has been a member of the Irish Academy of Management Council for many years and held the position of Vice Chair for a number of years. Christine is also an active member of the CIPD MidWest Committee and organises an annual seminar for HR practitioners in January. Her work with the CIPD has extended to conducting an annual national survey of HR practices for CIPD Ireland. https://www.cipd.ie/knowledge/hr-fundamentals/hr/hr-practices-ireland-survey Her consultancy work covers both private and non-for-profit clients.

She is a regular contributor on issues related to gender in the workplace in outlets including the Irish Times, Sunday Business Post, RTE and Newstalk.

Research Interests

My main research interests are in the area of diversity in the workplace. These include women in management; investigating the work experiences of immigrants; and ageing and the workplace.

Christine was the Principal Investigator on a European Commission funded project 2014-2016 - Gender Equality in decision-Making (GEM). This research examines the role that human resource management processes pertaining to recruitment, performance management and promotion play in attaining gender balance in senior decision-making roles.

She is currently a member of the Management Committee of an international interdisciplinary COST Action called DE-PASS which focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to determinants of physical activity behaviours.

Teaching Interests

Christine teaches both HRM and OB at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Her specific area of expertise is teaching professional skills such as selection interviewing and disciplinary meetings. She has won the UL Excellence in Teaching Award.
