Tony DobbinsTony is Professor/Chair of Employment Relations and HR Management, and Programme Director for MSc HRM programmes, at Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham. Previously, he was Professor of Employment Studies and Subject Head of the Management Group at Bangor Business School, Bangor University. Tony has also worked in various posts in both academia and the private and public sectors. He was an Irish Research Council funded Research Fellow at the Whitaker Institute for Innovation and Societal Change, National University of Ireland Galway, and spent eight years as a journalist in Dublin with Industrial Relations News.

His research interests include: employee voice/industrial democracy; workplace partnership; sociology of work, conflict and resistance at work; employment and skills in labour markets; the living wage/low pay; employment regulation. His research has been funded by several bodies (European Commission, Irish Research Council, Economic and Social Research Council, British Academy, Leverhulme Trust). He has published in the highest quality journals in work, employment, and management, including British Journal of Industrial Relations, British Journal of Management, Human Relations, Human Resource Management Journal, Work Employment & Society.

Tony is on the Editorial Board of Work, Employment & Society, and an external expert advisor for the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Eurofound). He engages in regular knowledge exchange in various media, including: BBC Radio 4, The Conversation, Huffington Post, The Guardian, i newspaper, Canada Globe and Mail. He also has external research experience and impact involving wider engagement with practitioners and policy-makers, through a range of employment relations/HRM projects with various organisations like the European Commission, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), Ireland’s National Economic and Social Development Office (NESDO). 

Beatrice I.J.M. Van der Heijden is a full professor of Business Administration, in particular, Strategic HRM at the Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and head of the Department Strategic HRM. Moreover, she occupies a Chair in Strategic HRM at Kingston University, London, UK, and at the Open University of the Netherlands, School of Management. She coordinated, among others, two European cross-cultural research projects on career success. Her main research areas are career development, employability, and aging at work. Van der Heijden is an Associate Editor of the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology and has published, among others in Journal of Vocational Behavior, HRM, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, and Career Development International.

Joy Schneer is a Professor of Management and Organizational Behavior at Rider University College of Business Administration. Prior to this, she was the Chair of the Management Department at Rider University. She is a past chair of the Gender and Diversity in Organizations Division of the Academy of Management. She has conducted research and taught around the world including China, Peru, Ireland, and Spain. Joy is a Fellow of the Eastern Academy of Management and a Director of EAM-International.

Research Interests
Dr. Schneer conducts research on career paths focusing on factors that influence career success. Her research has been published in top academic outlets (i.e. Academy of Management Journal, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Vocational Behavior). Her work focuses on the effects of employment gaps and family structure on career success has received widespread media attention (i.e. Business Week, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, London Times). She was awarded a Graduate Management Admissions Council grant for her twenty-year longitudinal Managerial Career Path Project. She is currently conducting an international study of the career expectations of business graduates.

Gerard Ryan is Professor of Marketing at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Catalonia, Spain. Originally from Limerick, he is a graduate of UCC (BComm, 1992) and the University of Limerick (MBS, 1994). He was a lecturer in Marketing at Middlesex University London before moving to Catalonia to the Escola Universitària del Maresme (Pompeu Fabra University) in Barcelona where he helped establish the first undergraduate studies in business logistics in Spain in collaboration with Cranfield School of Management.  He graduated with a PhD from the UOC Barcelona in 2004. He worked at a host of universities in Barcelona including the Pompeu Fabra University, the University of Barcelona, ESADE Business School and the Open University of Catalonia before moving to the Universitat Rovira i Virgili.  

Gerard is a Visiting Fellow at Cornell University in New York (US) and Visiting Professor at the Universidad Nacional del Sur, Argentina. He is an associate editor at Business Research Quarterly, the well-ranked multidisciplinary management journal of the Spanish Academy of Management, and member of the editorial advisory boards of the Journal of Research in Interactive Marketing and Revista Escritos Contables y de Administración. He is a senior researcher at the FHOM research group, accredited by the Government of Catalonia.  

He has published a number of university manuals on marketing in English, Spanish and Catalan. His research focuses on consumer behaviour with a particular emphasis on the ‘waiting consumer’ (online waiting, cultural aspects of waiting, waiting in tourism, etc).  More recently he has focused on emerging issues in vicarious consumption on social media. He has published in leading journals such as International Journal of Consumer Studies, Journal of Consumer Culture, Tourism Management, Journal of Services Marketing, Internet Research, Information Systems Journal, Journal of Business Ethics, Ethics & Behaviour and International Journal of HRM among others. 

Gerard is also a visual artist and musician. The dominant themes behind his art are consumers and consumption, influenced by his work in academia. His work was displayed as part of the Victoria & Albert Museum's exhibition on the Art of Selling Songs at the Ulster Museum. As a musician he played support to ex-Kraftwerk Wolfgang Flür in 2017 and shared a conference stage on the future of electronic music with Andy McCloskey of OMD and Rusty Egan of Visage whose Blitz Club in London established the New Romantic movement .  Gerard has released albums on a number of independent record labels (including ‘Consumer Behaviour ‘on Medical Records USA;  ‘The Product is You’ on Sincronica Spain;  ‘Post-Plagiarism’ on TONN Recordings, UK; ‘Nothing is Original on Detritti Records, Germany; and ‘Exercices de Style’ on Distag, France) and he designs album artwork for his fellow musicians.  

Mirela ValverdeBio

Mireia Valverde is Full Professor of Human Resource Management at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Reus, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain), where she has worked in different capacities since 2000 undertaking teaching duties (undergraduate, graduate and doctorate), management (unit coordinator, assistant department director and department director, coordinator of the doctoral program in economics and business) and research. Outside the URV, she has worked at different universities in Ireland and Catalonia, been a Visiting Research Fellow at Cornell University (2013-14) and carried out shorter research and teaching visits to other international universities. She has been Vice-President (2012-14) and President (2014-16) of the Human Resource Management section of ACEDE, the Spanish academy of management, and is currently a member of the Social Sciences Evaluation Committee of the university quality agency AQU Catalunya.

In research, Dr. Valverde is a founder member of the URV’s research group FHOM (Human Factors, Organisations and Markets), recognised as a consolidated group by the Catalan Government, which studies organisations and the impact of their management practices on their employees, consumers and society at large. She has published about 50 scientific papers in ranked journals (33 in JCR) and 20 research book chapters and reports. She has received 6 prizes for outstanding research at national and international level and has participated in over 20 research projects at local, national and international level, being the principal researcher in half of them. She has been associate editor of Business Research Quarterly (Q2 JCR) and is a member of the editorial board of other journals. As part of a collaboration URV-ESADE, she co-represents Spain in the CRANET international HRM network.

Research interests

Dr. Valverde’s main research line is on the implementation of human resource management practices, with a particular focus on the agency and interactions of different actors in this process. She also works more broadly on the fields of HRM, service management and consumer behaviour, the latter with a specific attention to the study of waiting. She has a keen interest in research methodologies.

Another of Mireia’s specific interest relates to good practices in PhD supervision and the professionalization of doctoral studies by and large. In this regard, she has completed the supervision or co-supervision of 11 doctoral theses, is currently supervising 2 more and, from 2014, is part of the URV’s Group for the Professionalization of Doctoral Supervision at the URV. With this group, she has delivered training for PhD supervisors and candidates in and outside the URV, participated in multiple doctoral workshops and other PhD supervision fora, co-written a book and book chapter about good practices in doctoral supervision, and co-organised the expert workshop Tarragona Think Tank on PhD Supervision Training. She is currently beginning to carry out research on this topic.

During this research visit, Mireia is also to be exploring new research lines.
