What do we mean when in the study of literature, and of world literature in particular, we use the terms "major" and "minor"? For most of the history of the discipline this has posed no problems, but more recently incisive questions have been raised on the issue. This lecture will look at some of these questions.

Theo D’haen is Chair of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Leuven (Louvain), Belgium, and an influential figure in fields of literary research including modernism and postmodernism, post-colonialism, the comparative literary histories of both America and Europe, and the evolving subject of World Literature.
