Doolin Writers' Weekend

Doolin Writers' Weekend

The fifth annual Doolin Writers’ Weekend, in partnership with the University of Limerick’s Creative Writing programme, will take place at Hotel Doolin from the 3rd-5th February, 2017, showcasing some of Ireland’s leading contemporary writers including Goldsmith’s Prize Winner Mike McCormack and Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize Winner Sara Baume, poet Rita-Ann Higgins, Claire Louise Bennett, Alan McMonagle, Karl Parkinson and many more. The weekend will also feature top independent publishers Lisa Coen and Sarah Davis-Goff from Tramp Press, Declan Meade from The Stinging Fly and literary agents Ivan Mulcahy and Sallyanne Sweeney from Mulcahy Associates and Commissioning Editor of Harper Collins Anna Kelly.

The three-day programme has something for every level of writer from beginners to advanced with workshops in novel writing, short story, poetry, experimental fiction, editing, publishing, a walking meditation workshop, the launch of the 2017 edition of UL’s literary journal The Ogham Stone, live music and DJ’s and an open mic evening.

The winners of the Doolin Writers’ Competition will also be announced, with a prize fund of €2500 in the categories of Short Story, Poetry and Flash Fiction. This year’s judges include Irish Book Award winners Sinéad Gleeson and E.M. Reapy.

‘One of the key aspects of the festival for us is that it has the feel of a community with people joining  us here every year and just picking up where things left off, audiences and artists feeling at one and enjoying the communal spirit of the weekend,’ said Donal Minihane, festival organiser and Hotel Doolin General Manager. ‘We at UL Creative Writing are delighted to partner with the Doolin Festival,’ remarked Joseph O’Connor, novelist and Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Limerick. ‘I see having a connection with a vibrant and growing local literary festival as hugely beneficial to our student writers.’
