Many law graduates use their degree internationally to pursue highly successful careers in a range of diverse fields, from diplomacy to research, advocacy to financial services. Read about Raymond's student experience of pursuing a career as an Investment Compliance Officer with an international hedge fund company in New York below:

‘I look back on my time at the University of Limerick as a time filled with opportunities – academic, social and sporting.

Having graduated with a BA in Law and Accounting in August 2016 I was awarded the Fr John Conlisk Scholarship, one of many scholarships and awards offered exclusively to UL students, and commenced an MBA in Finance at Fairfield University, CT.

The Law and Accounting programme combines two traditionally separate disciplines offering students a unique edge in seeking employment post-graduation. In addition, it is delivered in Ireland’s only university to be completely committed to providing students with a pioneering clinical placement, setting its students apart.

"A BA in Law and Accounting will act as a fantastic platform for a successful and rewarding career."

For me the course had many highlights. Project work was always an important element and for me this this culminated in a fantastic opportunity to undertake a final year project conducting independent research supported by an extremely knowledgeable and approachable faculty. I believe the quality of work students produce is emphasised by the list of companies who sponsor awards throughout the four years.

The careers office is a resource second to none. Focus is placed on developing professional skills and industry contacts supported by faculty. I had the opportunity to complete an eight-month placement in Holmes O’Malley Sexton Solicitors, a full-service law firm before completing a further internship in A & L Goodbody, a corporate law firm.

An added benefit of the programme is that it offers exemptions for professional accounting and legal exams as well as being recognised internationally. Students for example may be eligible to undertake the New York bar.

Whatever your path following graduation, of which there are many, a BA in Law and Accounting will act as a fantastic platform for a successful and rewarding career. I have experienced this first-hand, beginning my career as an Investment Compliance Officer with a hedge fund company, Man Group in New York. There I manage and oversee investment compliance oversight across Man US using the skills and knowledge I have developed.  A typical day includes applying legal skills in the interpretation of fund contracts and legislation, providing advice to investment personnel, extrapolating interpretations and creating risk and accounting metrics for monitoring purposes."
