Performance Standards & Progression

In order to progress in your chosen course, you must meet specific academic requirements in each semester, year or part of a course.

Please note: Some courses may have different minimum standards or may not award compensating fail grades. Please refer to your course booklet for these details.

Performance Standards & Progression

The minimum standards of academic performance in each semester, year or part of a course are:

  • A QCA  of at least 2.00
  • No deficient grades (E.g. F, N, NG, I)

Students who achieve the minimum performance standard at the end of each academic year can proceed to the next year of their course or to graduation.

D1 and D2 are known as "compensating fail grades."

If you have been awarded one or more compensating fail grades but maintain a QCA of at least 2.00, you may proceed to the next stage of your course and do not have to repeat these modules.

If you have been awarded a compensating fail grade in one or more modules and your QCA is below 2.00, you may be required to repeat those modules.

If you do not achieve the minimum standards at the end of a semester, academic year or part of a course, you will be notified and informed that one of the following courses of action applies to you.

End of Autumn Semester
  • Take annual repeats: Repeat a max of 2 modules (grades capped at C3)
  • Repeat a full semester
  • Repeat the year (without progression to Co-op or Teaching Practice)
  • Have your enrolment terminated
End of Spring Semester
  • Take annual repeats: Repeat a max of 2 modules (grades capped at C3)
  • Repeat a full semester
  • Repeat the year
  • Have your enrolment terminated
Following Annual Repeats
  • Link-in by repeating deficient modules in the next academic year (max 2 per semester)
  • Repeat a full semester
  • Repeat the year
  • Have your enrolment terminated

If you fail to obtain a passing grade for one or more modules in annual repeats, you are permitted to re-take a maximum of two of these “deficient” modules in the following academic year on a “link-in repeat” basis. Link-in repeat grades will not be capped.

You are not permitted to take any other modules at the same time as link-in repeat modules. This means that you will not progress to the next year of your course until you have cleared your deficient modules. In effect, your course of study will be extended by one year.

Registering for a Link-In Repeat

  1. Complete the Link-In Form. (Forms can also be collected from the Academic Registry or Fees offices)
  2. Complete Fees Payment via the Student Portal
    - EU Students: €568 per module.
    - Non-EU Students: €1623 per module
  3. Submit form to Fees Office after fee has been paid.

Once you have done this, the Fees Office will process your form and send it to Academic Registry, who will register you for the module(s).

Students who have achieved outstanding academic performance in a particular semester may be placed on the President's List. In order to be recognized, a student must:

  • be registered as a full-time student
  • have taken a minimum of four exams in the semester
  • have achieved a QCA  of no less than 3.5 in the semester
  • have no M-graded exams, including FYPs or dissertations, in that semester.

Students on the President's List will receive a congratulatory letter from the President.
