Anthony Woods, Mark Walsh and Ruairi O’Donnell attending State University of New York Model European Union, March 2015

On 25-9 March 2015 three UL AHSS postgraduates represented UL at the Model European Union hosted by the State University of New York and City College New York in Manhattan. Anthony Woods, Mark Walsh and Ruairi O’Donnell are studying Human Rights in Criminal Justice, Sociology and International Commercial Law and assumed the roles of Poland’s political leadership at the prestigious EU Summit simulation during which parliamentary protocols are followed. The team acquitted itself very well in a forum where UL has an established presence arising from a long term relationship with SUNY. In January 2010 UL hosted the MEU for its first relocation to Ireland. The team was led by faculty advisor Dr. Ruan O’Donnell, Senior Lecturer in History, and received sponsorship from Josephine Page of the International Education Department, Dean Tom Lodge and Professor Anthony McElligott of the History Department. The 2015 event was convened in the Global Centre of the City University of New York and on the City College of New York campus in upper Manhattan. Teams representing all EU member states and the Commission debated major policy issues in parallel and plenary session covered by a student Press Corps. UL was facilitated by SUNY colleagues Professor Kathleen Dowley (MEU Director) and Dean Bruce Sillner (Director of International Programmes).
