Clinical research interests: Clinical trials, surgical technique, education related to surgical technique, colorectal cancer, laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, the mesocolon, colorectal anatomy, Crohn's Disease, Recurrent Crohn's Disease.
Med-tech research interests: Developing devices for (1) safe enteral feeding and gastrointestinal decompression, (2) more effective transanal endoscopic microsurgery, (3) for enhancing rendition and recording of operative surgery and (5) devices/mechanisms for automated retrieval and processing of lymph nodes from operative specimens.
Bioscience interests: Classification of colon and rectal cancer, database generation, outcome prediction, recurrent Crohn's disease, microbial ecology, Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism(T-RFLP) analysis, 454 pyrosequencing, laser capture microscopy, development of techniques to harness the potential inherent in public gene expression repositories.
Surgery is committed to maintain a continuum of thematic research in a number of key areas. These involve multi-institutional collaborations with the department of Colorectal Surgery at the Cleveland clinic, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Johns Hopkins, Surgery at University College Dublin, University College Galway and Anatomy at the NUIG.
