The Irish World Academy has a tradition of PhD level research since its inception in 1994. In the first instance, the research specialisation focussed on Irish Music Studies. Completed dissertations in this area include:

More recently, doctoral level research has expanded to reflect the specialist interests of the Academy's growing faculty, including ethnochoreology, ritual studies, chant studies, dance studies, music education, music therapy and community music. Current areas of doctoral research include:
