Introduction to Irish Traditional Music, Song and Dance
Two modules are provided specifically for visiting study abroad students, one in each semester and open to all of these students. Both modules are designed to introduce the students to the history and structures (aural, physical and in a wider cultural sense) of traditional Irish music and dance.
The four main divisions of Irish traditional music - instrumental dance music, song, dancing, and harp music - are catered for within the confines of this course. The history of each component is explored but there is an emphasis on their modern context and development. There will be two lectures per week. Wherever possible the lectures will be illustrated by live performance and the use of audio-visual material. This module involves a weekly performance class where students learn performance practice in the fields of music, song or dance.
The two modules are:
Autumn Semester - MD4135 – Introduction to Irish Traditional Music, Song and Dance 1
Spring Semester - MD4136 – Introduction to Irish Traditional Music, Song and Dance 1
