Programme Outline

Autumn Semester:

Repertoire, Style and Contextualised Performance 1

In this module students will study both the various repertoires of Traditional Irish Music and the diversity of historical and current styles of performance. Theoretical criteria will be examined concerning the conceptual and structural tools necessary for analysis of style and repertoire. Manuscript and print sources will be examined and interpretation of these sources considered. Also recordings, both audio and video will be assessed. Vocational skills necessary for the professional traditional musician will be addressed. This will include music technology (recording, live sound production, acoustics) and music business (copyright law, management and promotion structures). Tutors from the panel will be selected and allowed to represent their repertoire and style as examples of the living tradition and students will both record these sessions and use acquired skills to analyse style and repertoire which will inform their own performance practice.

Traditional Irish Music Practicum I and II

In this module students will create, design and manage their own performance programme under the supervision of the course director. To this end students will attend instrumental / voice classes with tutors from the panel in a variety of teaching contexts, adopted in accordance with the needs of the student and the optimum teaching environment for the tutor. It is envisaged that these classes will range from one-on-one individual classes to group classes to master-class style performance / class. As part of this module there will be also an emphasis on various ensemble performances which will be constructed in workshops led by the course director. This module will be assessed by both continuous assessment, end of semester interview and end of semester performance.
