Introduction
Ethnomusicology is the study of music in its cultural context. By employing conceptual models developed in the Social Sciences and by testing these within the context of field research, Ethnomusicology provides an alternative approach to the study of Irish Traditional Music, Popular Music and World Music. This approach embraces Anthropology, Cultural Studies, and Education in addition to relevant area and musical studies.
The Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology is a one year, taught postgraduate degree in the academic study of traditional music. It was conceived in association with the Master of Arts Degree in Ethnochoreology. The course caters to the expanding international interest in Irish Traditional Music and it also acknowledges the growing significance of Ethnomusicology as an academic discipline. While the programme - the first of its kind in an Irish University - will be taught primarily by members of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, guest lecturers and artists-in residence will provide additional instructional support.
