Programme of Study
The MA degree Ritual Chant & Song is a one year, full-time postgraduate programme of study. Students may be permitted to extend their study over a second full-time year subject to available places, the agreement of the course director and the head of the Irish World Academy. Each stream consists of six, 3-credit modules (four core modules and two elective modules) and a final presentation weighted at 9 credits.
The core modules of Chant Performance include Materials and Context in Western Plainchant 1 and 2 and Chant Practicum 1 and 2. The core modules for Ritual Song include Liturgical Theology and Ritual Studies 1 and 2 and Ritual Song Practicum 1 and 2.
The Irish World Academy Autumn and Spring Electives are an integral part of both streams. These elective modules are self-directed programmes of study which allow students to specialise further in an area of their programme specialisation or to select a project based on expertise available in the other areas of study at the Irish World Academy including Ethnomusicology, Ethnochoreology, Music Technology, Music Education, Music Therapy, Classical String Performance, Community Music, Dance Performance and Irish Traditional Music Performance. Elective projects may be academic or performance-based and are selected in consultation with the course director.
The final presentation involves a performance/submission combination of both. This is decided in consultation with the course director.
