Introduction
The Certificate in Music and Dance is a progression and access based programme from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick. This can be offered as a two-year part time, or full-time for one-year course. The Certificate differs significantly from other music and dance programs on offer. As it can involve learning by distance, it enables the learner to complete modules from home, community centres or indeed whilst still in employment. The course includes occasional master classes and tutorials. Designed to suit the needs and timetable of the individual learner, the course is both flexible and diverse.
Objectives:
The Certificate aims:
- To offer the possibility to study for a recognized qualification to individuals throughout the country, who may not be in a position to engage in full-time education at another location.
- To encourage the individual to enhance both musical/ dance knowledge and performance.
The specific objectives are:
- Students will cover 10 modules in total part-time over 2 years, or 1 year fulltime using CD–Rom and workshops/ master classes.
- Learners will develop skills in music and dance – any genre is welcome. For example, music, dance or voice may be taken as the learner’s choice of second study.
Programme Structure
Session 1:
- Practicum 1a is designed to enhance the learner’s skill and knowledge surrounding main instrument and performance interest.
- Practicum 1b is regarding a second performance interest,band work, song and dance.
- Introduction to Traditional Music and Dance Studies 1.
- Contextualising and Vocational Studies 1 – Popular Music and Dance Studies / Audio-Visual Technology
- Reflective Practice portfolio, the student will be asked to keep a diary through out the course and reflect on their learning and experiences and engage reading about performance.
Session 2:
- Practicum 2a (as 1a).
- Practicum 2b (as 1b).
- Introduction to Traditional Music and Dance Studies 2.
- Contextualising and Vocational Studies 3 – Music and Dance Education / Community Music and Dance.
- Traveller Music Studies.
Career Opportunities
This qualification not only enhances performance skills, but also opens doors to further study.
- Pathway into certain degree progammes - in the first instance, successful completion of the course to the required standard will enable students to be considered for a place in second year of the fulltime BA in Music and Dance at the University of Limerick.
*Criteria for progression will be based on a number of places available, relevance of performance and academic achievement on the Certificate. - Will provide training in music literacy, group playing and arrangement, song and dance, enabling the students to work in a variety of educational contexts, both solo and group.
- Dancers will experience ensemble, choreography work and movement awareness.
- Will develop academic, literacy and presentation skills, important skills for a wide range of careers.
- Will provide students with the basics of recording technology, leading to the possibility of work or further training in this area.
- Will develop students’ current performance abilities and encourage the development of new performance skills including keyboard and composition, leading to the possibility of careers as performers.
- Some Community Music and Education skills are to be gained, opening pathways to teaching, work shopping and indeed further study.
- Opportunities in Arts administration.
Entrance Requirements
Audition:
An interview/audition is arranged for each applicant at a date of convenience. This must be passed in order to gain entry onto the course.
Access and Eligibility:
- Those applying to study on the certificate must do so directly to the University, not through the CAO. Contact admissions.
- Music and / or dance experience in at least one area is required.
- Successful applicants will have successfully conducted an interview, audition and a written assignment.
