Ferenc Szücs

Ferenc Szücs has performed in over fifty countries and has associations with numerous orchestras, ensembles and institutes worldwide. Born in Hungary, he studied at the Béla Bartók Conservatoire and at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest with Ferenc Wilheim, Ede Banda, András Mihály and György Kurtág and won the prestigious Hungarian State Award for musical excellence in particular for his interpretations of Bach.
He was invited to join the Hungarian State Orchestra while still studying at the Liszt Academy and this was shortly followed by his appointment as Principal Cellist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London. He played with many of the great conductors of our time including Solti, Doráti, Maazel, Wand, Haitink, Ozawa, Rozhdestvensky, Davis and Pritchard. He also performed a wide range of contemporary music working closely with composers such as Lutoslawski, Boulez, Messiaen, Tippet, Stockhausen, Birtwistle, Xenakis, Schnittke and performing their works under their directorship.
Ferenc Szücs has held appointments as principal cellist with the London Festival Orchestra, the New Queens Hall Orchestra and the Oxford Orchestra of Camera. He played as guest principal with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Opera House-Covent Garden, English National Opera, Mozart Festival Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, English Symphonia, Orchestra of St John's, London Mozart Players, Irish Chamber Orchestra, National Arts Centre Orchestra in Canada and the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Holland.
As soloist, Ferenc Szücs has given recitals and played concertos in England, Hungary, Italy, Germany, France, Austria, Spain, USA and South America. Recent highlights included solo tour of the Balearic Islands, performances of both Haydn Concertos in Budapest, Vienna and London, the Dvorak concerto Halifax, England. In Ireland recitals of Debussy, Ravel, Bartók, Popper at the Killaloe Festival, performance of Kodaly Sonata for Solo Cello in Dublin, recital of EJ Moeran Chopin, Osborne, at the National Library and the complete Solo Cello Suites of J S Bach in Glenstal Abbey. He also appeared at the Sionna festival in Ireland, the Goethe institute in Rome and with La Musica International Chamber Music Festival in Sarasota, Florida.
He held several teaching posts in Hungary and England and contributed to large-scale educational projects. He has given master classes, coached youth orchestras and taught on summer schools in Italy, England, Ireland, Hungary, Turkey and the United States.
Ferenc Szücs has been member of various chamber groups and collaborations and is currently member of Trianton - The Irish Piano Trio. With the Fibonacci Sequence, the London Festival Ensemble, the New Queens Hall Quartet and the Bach Ensemble in Hungary he made radio broadcasts and recordings for ASV, BMG, Arte Nova, Future Classics, RTE Lyric fm and
Hyperion.
As Director of the Master of Arts Course in Classical String Performance at the University of Limerick he is involved in all aspects of music making including recitals, master classes, chamber music, chamber orchestra, and working in association with the Irish Chamber Orchestra
