Performance Practice at the Academy

The integration of performance and reflection is integral to the vision of the Irish World Academy.

At the undergraduate level, modular design reflects our commitment to the inclusion of both high quality, performance tuition, as well as contextual, theoretical studies. The BA Irish Music and Dance includes one-to-one tuition with internationally recognised musicians and dancers, as well as ensemble classes and workshops with visiting specialists. The BA Voice and Dance, due to commence in 2008, will combine specialist tuition in a variety of vocal and movement traditions (including chant, traditional dance and song, contemporary dance, and world voice and dance traditions).

The Irish World Academy currently offers four, taught postgraduate programmes which allow for a performance specialisation. These include:

MA in Ritual Chant & Song

MA Classical String Performance

MA Dance Performance (Irish Traditional or Contemporary Dance)

MA Irish Traditional Music Performance

In addition, music / dance performance may be included as part of the Final Presentation in:

MA Ethnomusicology

MA Ethnochoreology

Ensemble music making and improvisation are also core activities in:

MA Community Music

MA Music Therapy

GDE (Mus) / M.Ed. Music Education

The Irish World Academy is in the process of developing a proposal to include performance as part of a 'body of works', contributing to the award of a PhD
