The ethos of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance is set up in the following way: Our taught programmes consist of academic programmes on the one hand, such as the MA in Ethnomusicology and the MA in Ethnochoreology, and performance programmes on the other hand, such as the MA in Classical String Performance, Contemporary Dance Performance, Irish Traditional Music Performance, Chant Performance and Irish Traditional Dance Performance. Along with these twin, taught energies of academic reflection and performance practice, there are also two other aspects. One is our community outreach projects; we call this ‘bealach’, the Irish word for path (Cultural community pathways). We also have artists in residence, such as the Irish Chamber Orchestra (a 20 piece professional string orchestra), Daghdha Dance Company (a professional contemporary dance company), and a host of visiting solo musicians, dancers, composers and choreographers. This four-fold energy therefore, of reflection and performance in the taught programmes and community outreach and artists in residence, create together the synergy that which lies at the heart of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance ethos. It translates into our logo like this. (Animation follows where shapes representing the four-fold energy combine to form the Academy logo)
