WOW, What an Opening Day!

Jon Cook (NMSU) & Hal Hart (TRW), ICSE 2000 WOW Co-Editors

We hope you enjoyed your opening day of ICSE, ‘cause we certainly did! Professor Castells’ keynote speech was just what we need, a context and challenge that puts our work into the responsibilities of the rest of society. It reminds us of why we thought research in and practice of software engineering was important in the first place. If you attended the “Impact of SE” panel that Lee Osterweil chaired, you saw an excellent introspective view of SE that nicely complemented the outside view of the keynote speech. As researchers we naturally focus on problems, but we were reminded to be proud of the successes of SE, and to take credit for them and do a little self-promotion. Then in the afternoon was the SIGSOFT and TCSE awards ceremony, fulfilling an important aspect of professionalism to honor peers’ achievements and set examples & goals for newcomers. WOW today covers much of this. Whether you attended the technical sessions or sat in on the FoSE, PETT, or SEAT tracks, we hope you had as much brain exercise as we did!
