Tutorial T14: Application Service Providers: System Development Using Services over the Net

By Anthony Finklestein

"Five years from now, no one will be buying and running their own software. We'll look back on those days and laugh."

Tutorial T14 was jointly developed by the international team of Kenji Takahashi (Information Sharing Platform Labs. NTT) and Wolfgang Emmerich and Anthony Finkelstein (Dept. of Computer Science, University College London). The tutorial looked at case studies of ASPs, the requirements of ASPs (both of the end-user and the service provider), and architectures and enabling technologies for ASPs. A unique feature of the tutorial was its in-depth coverage of the software development issues that arise in the use of services provided by third parties over the net. The idea for the tutorial originated as a workshop proposal, but we realised that the field was unstructured and that a tutorial that brought together and organised the complex issues was necessary. We believe that new research issues are bubbling up in this area. Watch this field!
