Club
History
The University of Limerick Hurling
and Football Club was founded in October 1974 by Tom
Doheny (Tullaroan, Co. Kilkenny), Tom Hogan
(Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare), Jack O’Regan (Ahane, Co.
Limerick) and both Felix O’Regan and Pat Galvin
(Clonakilty, Co. Cork) all of whom were then students in
the College. In 1998/99 the club celebrated its 25'th
anniversary.
Over the years they each have
enjoyed considerable success both on and off the field.
This success has enabled us to build very strong active
clubs and a supportive following both on and off campus.
The clubs have a combined membership of over 1,000
students and fields 15 teams in various grades in
national, provincial and Limerick county competitions.
Since their foundation 25 years ago, they have won a
combined total of forty national third level titles.
1991 saw the amalgamation of the
University of Limerick and Thomond college, and the
addition of many players from Thomond College strengthed
the club, UL reached the Fitzgibbon Cup final in
1992, since then the club has progressed to have two
fresher Hurling teams and a strong Intermediate team
along with Fitzgibbon Cup team.
The club and some of its members
have been very successful down through the years winning
many competitions and Honours. This should be seen as a
gauge to level of progress the club has made
particularly in the last ten years.
The most memorable
occasions for the hurling club were the winning on the
Fitzgibbon Cup in 1989,1994 and 2002.
