UL were lucky to qualify for the fitzgibbon league final with this poor display against DIT today (29th November) in Puchan. UL playing against a stiff
wind found themselves four points in arrears early on as DIT easily exposed the UL rearguard. UL came back well thanks laregly to four first half points
from the stick of David McCormack at full forward. However UL were dealt another major blow as DIT found the net again albeit in controversial
circumstances. DIT desrved these scores as they were playing well and these came desapite an outstanding first half display from full back Peter Dowling.
UL had futher scores from O’Flynn, Bugler(free), O’Cairealain and Ruth to leave the half time score line at 2-02 to 0-08.
UL began the second half brightly with points from Kennedy and an exceelent effort from Ruth. However UL conceeded another soft goal to
DIT and this left them trailing by three points after twelve minutes of the second half. UL rang the changes with the intoduction of Egan, Hickey
switched with Stapleton and O’Dwyer moved to centre forward with O’Cairealain switching to the wing. These changes clearly had the desired
effect with O’Dwyer particulary prominent. Bugler landed an inspirational score from play and this was followed by points from Kennedy, McCormack
and Ruth. Despite two well taken frees for DIT, UL had now gained superiority and the closed out the match with points from Egan, McCormack
and the impressive Ruth.
In a very poor display from this UL side Peter Dowling and Matt Whelan were prominent in defence, Ruth and O’Dwyer were to the fore upfront.
Others to impress were Brendan Bugler, Seamus Hickey and David McCormack.
