Intermediate League Final

Wednesday March 28th 2007

University of Limerick 0-18
Limerick Institute of Technology 1-13

In perfect playing conditions in Kilmallock yesterday The University of Limerick claimed the All Ireland Intermediate Championship when they defeated near neighbours LIT on a scoreline of 0-18 to 1-13. Aided by a strong breeze in the first half LIT looked the sharper in front of goal and led 10 points to 8 at half time. Cathal Mullane was very accurate from placed balls and was aided by Limerick Senior Gavin O Mahony who was resolute in defence in the LIT half back line. UL too relied on Conor Hasset from placed balls who was accurate throughout the hour.

The second half proved to be an exciting 30 minutes with both teams taking the lead on different occasions. A goal for LIT 5 minutes from time put them one point up and looked to have sealed victory but UL showed great tenacity and responded with three long range points from Hassett (1) and his mid field partner Noel O Murchu (2). LIT had a chance to snatch it at the end but resolute defence restricted them to a point, so victory went to the University side.

The UL captain James Heffernan of Clonoulty Rossmore accepted the cup on behalf of a jubilant UL team who were managed by Patsy Morrissey (Cork) Ger Cunningham (Limerick) and Niall O Sullivan (Limerick). Outstanding performances from Conor Hassett (Man of the Match) (8 points) Kieran Joyce and Padraic Treacy for the winners.
